Introduction to

Lower Eyelid Surgery Pittsburgh

The eyes are a central focal point of the face, but unfortunately, the lower eye area can be one of the first spots to show signs of aging. Over the years, the body produces less collagen and elastin within the skin of the eyelids, resulting in sagging and the formation of eyelid bags. These eyelid bags cause one to appear older than their stated age and give a more tired appearance.

Using advanced techniques, Simona V. Pautler M.D., F.A.C.S. can reverse the signs of aging by performing under-eye bag removal and give the eyes a rejuvenated appearance. If you are unhappy with the appearance of under-eye bags, read on to learn more about lower eyelid surgery and if you are a candidate.

Why Lower Eyelid Surgery

Why Undergo Lower Eyelid Surgery

Lower blepharoplasty surgery encompasses several surgeries performed on the lower eyelids for eye bag removal and a more youthful appearance. Through the removal of excess skin and fat, as well as tightening of the outer corner of the eye (canthopexy), years of aging can be reversed with lower eyelid surgery.

Using a customized and individualized approach, Dr. Simona Pautler will develop the best treatment plan to provide you with exceptional results. Dr. Pautler’s vast knowledge of eyelid anatomy and extensive experience are pivotal in providing a natural, more youthful appearance of the eyelids. Additionally, it allows Dr. Pautler to better identify other procedures, such as a facelift or brow lift, upper eyelid surgery, or tightening of the corners of the eyelids, that may be required to achieve the most aesthetically pleasing appearance of the eyes.

Who Is A Good Candidate For Lower Eyelid Surgery

Am I A Candidate Eyelid Surgery

The ideal candidate for a lower blepharoplasty procedure is unhappy with the appearance of excess skin or bags under the eyes. This procedure is well suited for both men and women who are in good medical health and who do not have excessive dry eye problems. Good candidates are non-smokers as this helps maximize healing potential and have realistic expectations about the procedure. Under-eye bag removal surgery can be performed at any age, but the majority of patients are over the age of 35, as this is typically when the signs of aging begin to occur.

If you are unsure if you are a candidate for a lower blepharoplasty in Pittsburgh, make an appointment with Dr. Simona Pautler. This will provide an opportunity to discuss your concerns and explore your options. During this appointment, it is important to be honest and forthcoming with any medical conditions or medications (like blood thinners) as these can impact the results of the procedure.

What To Expect

From the Results

A lower blepharoplasty or eye bag surgery can reverse many of the natural signs of aging such as bags under the eyes, drooping lower eyelids, and excess skin. This procedure can provide you with a younger, well-rested-looking appearance that looks natural with well-hidden scars. The overall results of surgery may vary depending on whether you choose to undergo any additional surgical or non-surgical procedures in addition to the lower eyelid surgery.

Before The Procedure

At your initial consultation, you will discuss your goals and desires for the procedure with Dr. Pautler. In addition, Dr. Pautler will examine your eyes and face to determine the procedure or procedures that can best accomplish these goals. A review of your medical history will also be conducted to ensure you are a good candidate for the surgery. By the end of your initial visit, Dr. Pautler and you will have finalized a customized plan that can achieve a natural, younger-looking you without completely changing your appearance.

During Your Lower Blepharoplasty

The procedure uses tiny incisions placed below the lash line or inside the lower eyelid. The incision inside the lower lid is used when only excess fat needs to be addressed, if excess skin exists, the incision will be below the lash line. From these incisions, excess fat will be removed, and excess/sagging skin can be removed. The incisions are then closed using sutures.

The procedure is performed under local anesthetic and sedation, allowing patients to return home the same day. Typically, the procedure will take one to two hours to complete, which may differ if additional procedures are performed.

To address her tired and drawn look, this patient underwent surgery of both upper and lower eyelids. Her upper lids had skin removed with a small fat graft. Her lower lids had a transconjunctival fat removal and fat grafting of the tear trough and the cheek. She looks so much younger!

The Cost of Lower Blepharoplasty in Pittsburgh

The lower eyelid surgery cost depends on several factors but typically ranges from $5,000 to $7,000. The price is determined by multiple factors, including the surgeon’s expertise, additional procedures, and associated support staff and surgical fees.

Experienced surgeons provide exceptional results with a lower risk of complications and over/under correction. Surgeons who can provide phenomenal results are in high demand and will often have higher prices. Although the upfront costs may be higher, an expert surgeon may be cheaper in the long run if they reduce the risk of a complication or secondary surgery.

Additional fees that must be included in the total cost of the procedure include those associated with the surgical suite, medications, anesthesia, and support staff. At your initial consultation, a detailed explanation of the costs will be provided to help eliminate confusion and reduce the financial stress of the procedure.
